Aéropostale was started in New York, New York by R.H Macy & Co. in 1987. The name has a French meaning for air mail, and is sometimes referred to simply as Aéro. They are known for selling American style clothing for the tween and young adult market. Although they have only been running for just over 23 years, they have expanded to over 900 stores worldwide, and tend to be located in strip malls near major cities and marketing areas. Following their success, the company launched a spin-off brand called P.S. that has a target market of children for with similar brand image. In 1994, the parent company R.H. Macy & Co. was acquired by industry mogul Federated Department Stores, and the subsidiary was then purchased by MSS Delaware Inc. and Bear Stearns for $15 million. In 2002, the company went public under the stock symbol, ARO. Despite its early success, the company actually took until 2005 to launch an e-commerce web store, which captured an astounding $79.1 million only three years after its initial establishment. Aéropostale went global in 2006, first expanding to Canada, then Puerto Rico, and eventually all the way across the globe to the Middle East, opening stores in Dubai. It even plans to continue expanding its presence in the Middle East to Kuwait, Bahrain, and Katar, and eventually to the UAE. Their close competitors include other American Style clothing stores with similar target markets including: Sephora, American Eagle, Old Navy, Hollister, and Hot Topic. While they do not specifically market to a certain gender, the retailer offers clothing lines for both men and women, including tank tops, bras, swim apparel, jeans, shorts, tees, accessories, and underwear.
