From tents and yoga mat to skis and bicycles, Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) supplies nature lovers with everything they need to venture into the wilderness. A member-owned cooperative, REI is dedicated to giving back to the outdoor community—and even with more than 154 stores across the country, it remains the same down-to-earth brand as when it was first founded in 1938.
For just 20 dollars, you can become an REI co-op member for life, which means member perks like the annual member dividend of 10 percent back, member-only special offers, access to in-store REI garage sales, and reduced prices on classes, events, rentals, services, and trips.
Not yet a member but interested in becoming one? You can get a free 20-dollar gift card when you add a membership onto your purchase of 100 dollars.
With the REI Co-Op Elite Mastercard, you’ll receive 5 percent back on REI purchases, 2 percent back on mobile wallet purchases, and 1 percent back everywhere else. There’s no annual fee, and you won’t be charged extra for foreign transactions. Plus, after you’re approved for the Mastercard, you’ll get a 100-dollar REI gift card when you make a purchase within 60 days.
In addition to material goods, REI provides outdoor enthusiasts with something money can’t buy: expert tips and advice. Whatever you’re doing outside—camping, hiking, cycling, climbing, paddling—REI has all the information you need, available for free on its website. Read checklists, skill series, how-tos, and more, all written by field experts.
Meet new people in your area who share your passion for the great outdoors by booking a class or signing up for an event with REI. You’ll also get hands-on guidance from leaders who know what they’re talking about. Whether you’re taking a kayaking class, photographing a national park, or camping beneath the stars, you’re sure to learn, find new friends, and have a great time.

REI isn’t an ordinary company—it’s a co-op, which means it has no shareholders and is able to put over 70 percent of its annual profit into bettering its community (i.e., membership dividends, employee profit-sharing and retirement, and investments in nonprofit organizations). Founded by a group of climbing friends over 80 years ago, REI is committed to serving those who love the outdoors by manufacturing high-quality products with sustainability standards.
