Military Discount

Nearly 1.5 million Americans actively serve in our military and armed forces, whether in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force or Coast Guard. Another 850,000-plus serve in the Reserves. With so many men and women defending and aiding our country under difficult conditions, it’s not surprising retailers, restaurants, service providers, and travel and entertainment companies offer a wide variety of discounts in grateful thanks.

As our way of thanking those who serve, we’ve compiled a detailed list of ways to save for veterans, all active branches and, in some instance, the families who stand behind them.

Location Based Discounts:
With many restaurants and retailers being franchised based, the decision about whether or not to offer discounts is left up to individual locations. Any discount in this list marked with the "Location Based" tag means that customers have reported receiving a military discount, but only at select locations. When in doubt, call your local store or restaurant for more information.

You can get Disney Park Hopper Passes for military at your local ITT Office on Base. The prices are a huge savings over the theme park. I have also seen deals for $99 for 5 day park hoppers. I dont know if that is still valid. You can also look up prices on your local MWR site under ITT and you can usually download a pricelist for your area. Just found out last month that Lucky Brand offers 20% off your purchase all the time....with a valid ID...seeing their clothes are made in America :) And I get a discount everytime I go into Lowe's, they honor it year round as does Souplantation, Michael's, Old Navy. I get tired of everyone giving things to the active or retired Vets. I am a Vet. that served 8 yrs. in 2 diffrent Branches of our Armed Forces. I don't see anyone giving anything to the millions of Vet's that did not retire but still did there duty. I thought that Memorial Day and Veterns Day in Nov. was to honor all Vet's not just the one's that have a military ID because they retired or are in the Reserve or Active duty. If you are going to offer discounts then be fair to all Vets and not just to the active or retired.

I just called home depot customer service. I wanted to place an order online, and of course wanted our military discount. I was told to place the order then give it an hour or two and call customer service. They can then refund the discount. It may work for you with the stores that have quit. Don't see why some stores would do it and others won't. They are a National chain not a franchise. Good luck!
Mike says:
We often use the military discount at Home Depot and Lowes. I saw someone turned away at the Home Depot because they tried to use a government civilian ID, not a military or dependent ID. Good for you Home Depot for following the rules on a MILITARY discount.

Derrick says:

To Mr. Bowman that was angry about not having an ID card. Sir; IF you served in the military then you should have a DD214 form. If you can't find it then call your local VA support team. Take it to your local court house and have it recorded there. Make several copies. Keep one with you. When asked for proof of military affiliation, present that form and it should suffice if the clerk or manager knows anything at all. Thank you for your service to our country Sir.

MAJOR D. It is true that the military used to suggest recording a DD214 at the court house but we now find that this makes it a public record in some states and anyone can view it which can lead to identity theft. "... then you should have a DD214 form. If you can't find it then call your local VA support team. Take it to your local court house and have it recorded there."

Kohls would not give me a discount.
robert says:
Bass pro does from the 15 th to the 22nd. Its not all month. I don't know exact dates. I'm not trying to complain but having a discount only on certain days is kind of pathetic. For example, Banana Republic, which offers it on the 1st. Seems to be more of a business tactic than appreciation. I don't shop at BP but Bass Pro should give vets free stuff because of how much I spend there, lol. The wallet always suffers.
Melissa says:
Helzberg diamonds offers 15% off:)
Erica says:
It makes no sense to not receive a military discount if you show your military ID but you are not in uniform. That's crazy! Anyone can buy a uniform offline or at any army/navy store. You have to be issued a Military ID. We've been places that say that my husband would get the discount if he were in uniform but our Marines in SC are not allowed to wear their uniforms into stores or restaurants.
MEG says:
This list is amazing! Thank You!
David Mork says:
For those Vets that are rightly upset that only active or retired Vets are able to prove military affiliation and cash in on these discounts: I recommend you sing up for TroopSwap.com. This site will verify your service affiliation and offer deals (like GroupON) only for vets, families, retired and active service members. Once verified the business giving the deal will not even ask for identification. TroopSwap has cracked the nut for those who have served...just not 20 years!!!

So I said to the manager, now my 11 years of service don't count? He stated not any more because Lowe's recently changed their policy. Retiree's only!!! Strangely enough, he approved my discount the day before. When confronted, he blamed it on the cashier for not checking for a retiree card. Thank you! Next we have to take the torture out of our veterans waiting for service connected disability benefits as well as the numerous hidden financial hardships our troops endure: especially the enlisted. The whole family suffers. How about the reserve component? Those troops work their backsides off all the time. The so-called 'part-time' commitment is darn near a full time job? Ask them how many times they have been deployed? 60% of our military medical people are reserve component. All reserve component soldiers should be counted as 'active duty'. Give 'em a break..work 5 days..2 day drill, back to work for 5 days? how about work a week, gone two weeks for annual training, back the next day for the job...30 days straight! I had three days to report for Desert Storm! Many had less? Who did they call for 9-11? The citizen soldier..the same people that started this country!! All kind of pilots, ship drivers, name it..the list is endless. They come back home just as dead!! just as messed up with a traumatic brain injury!! Part-time job? No!! Citizenship at it's finest! I suppose the military discount that is missing is the so called 'part-timers'.
ed gibbons says:
Just scanned the comments. That's another place where the part-timers take a hit. Most of us are not near a military post. The civilian environment could care less about us, let alone discounts. We carry the military weight without much recognition unless the balloon goes up an a local unit gets deployed. That is the reason many military discounts are not recognized away from military posts..there are just not very many reserve component members to make a 'presence' in the community. I agree..if a national chain offers discounts, the discount should be offered at EVERY store, not just at the stores near military bases. Great article. I downloaded it for reference. I don't routinely carry my military ID with me as I don't want it stolen.

You never came home to the greeting that I and many more of my fellow Vet's got, so stop whining and be greatful that they even care.

@Steve. Thank you for your service. It's heartbreaking to know how our Veterans were treated during/after Vietnam. One of my most beloved friends served in the Korean War. I learned thru him, that the silence of the returning soldiers belied the anguish carried deep within. Your appreciation for the small discounts offers really touched my heart. May God bless you & yours that you prosper in all ways. @Ed Gibbons. I wish there were more substantial and tangible recognition for any soldier, and their families. I've been fortunate that in my experience, whenever I've actually inquired about a military discount, the manager/asst. manager/or customer service reps graciously applied a discount of some sort or simply reduced the price. May God bless you & yours with His favor.

It is nice to see that so many businesses are offering discounts to our military personnel. It is, however, disturbing to see so many people looking at these goodwill gestures of appreciation as an entitlement and a basis for anger and name calling if you didn't get a discount. Appreciation and respect is a two-way street. If you get a discount, say thank-you. If you don't, you are always free to shop elsewhere.
