Black Friday Cyber Monday Buying Habits For 2018

The team at Gift Card Granny conducted a survey to observe the average American’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday buying habits. Topics such as shopping trends and gifting preferences were analyzed. 

• Online shopping is the preferred method when making a purchase on Black Friday
• More plan to shop on Black Friday this year, up from 69% in 2017 to 81% in 2018
• Majority of shoppers favor Black Friday deals over Cyber Monday

Black Friday Shopping

Responses indicate there may be an uptick in Black Friday shopping for 2018; 81% percent of U.S. adults plan to make at least one purchase on Black Friday compared to 69% percent in 2017.

  

Based on a recent study from Gallup, online shopping during the holidays has maintained steady growth over the past two decades and continues to rise according to respondents from our survey. Fifty percent of respondents shop online exclusively for Black Friday. Still, 37% prefer to shop both in-store and online while 13% are likely to only shop in-store. Additionally, Gallup’s survey denotes that holiday online shopping increased from 10% in 1998 to 65% in 2017. 

When compared to 2017, there is a 30% growth in Black Friday shopping among millennials and a 7% decrease in Black Friday shopping with respondents aged 35 or older. 

Cyber Monday vs Black Friday

Fifty-three percent of respondents state they made a purchase last year on Cyber Monday and 47% claim to have not. However, the majority (48%) of respondents prefer Black Friday deals over Cyber Monday (31%). Additionally, 21% would rather not shop on either day. 

Holiday Gift Ideas

Gift cards are among the most popular items this holiday season; nearly 80% plan to give a gift card as a gift. And although 50% of respondents haven’t sent an electronic gift card, more than 65%  would consider giving one. Ten percent of respondents would feel indifferent if they received a gift card while approximately 80% of respondents saying they would be happy or thrilled to receive one.

Survey Methods

Results for this Gift Card Granny poll are based on survey responses from October 17 through November 12, 2018 with a random sample of adults aged 18 and older. For results based on the total sample of national results, the margin of sampling error is ±2 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
