Activating Gift Cards

Plastic gift cards that are typically purchased online require activation. Find out how to quickly activate your gift card in three simple steps.

Why Do Some Gift Cards Require Activation

Have you ever received a new credit card in the mail? If so, you’ll have noticed a sticker located on the front of the card. This sticker provides directions on how to activate your credit card. Similar to credit cards, plastic gift cards that are not purchased in a retail store usually require activation.

How Gift Cards Are Activated

  1. Review the activation instructions. These can usually be found on a sticker adhered to the front of a card. If the sticker has been removed, directions are also located on the back of the card.
  2. Find the card numbers. Activation requires the 16-digit gift card number (located on the front of the card) and the Card Verification Number (CVN) (found to the right of the signature box on the back of the card).
  3. Activate your card online or through an automated phone system. On the back of the card you will see a website and 800 number provided. Choose either option to activate. Both require the 16-digit gift card number and CVN.

Why Does My Gift Card Need Activated

While this may seem like an annoyance, activating your card helps to prevent fraudulent transactions. Companies can verify the account number linked to the card to determine whether or not the card was sold or stolen.
