Don’t feel like going to the store to use your AMEX gift card? Well, you’re in luck because you can use your gift card online instead. You should know, though, that common problems may occur. Here’s what to do before attempting to shop online.
Before making a purchase, card owners are required to register the card. Want to know why? When an online order is placed, ecommerce stores often use a security process called Address Verification System (AVS) to confirm the card is linked to a billing address. Since your American Express gift card did not have your address associated with it when you received it, any attempts to make a purchase online before registering the card will likely result in a rejected order.
To register your AMEX gift card for online purchases, you must call their customer service line at 1-877-297-4438. You will be asked to enter the 15-digit card number and security code. Then you will need to speak with a customer service agent to provide your address for registration.
Be aware that certain stores do not allow the use of prepaid gift cards. Examples of restricted purchases include subscriptions, hotel reservations, car rentals, and transactions outside of the U.S.
AMEX does not charge an inactivity fee and funds do not expire. If your card expires, American Express’ customer service will reissue a gift card replacement with the remaining balance.
